The year 1996 for the first game follows from SEGA marking the series' 30th anniversary in 2026; Metacritic lists no date for it. The older games were sold in North America under the Shin Megami Tensei name (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4), which later releases dropped. Spin-offs such as the Persona 4 Arena fighting games and Persona Q are on Persona 4 Spin-offs.
What order should you play the Persona games in?
Any order. Persona 3, 4 and 5 each have a new protagonist and cast, and Persona 6 is announced as a new standalone story; SEGA calls Persona 4 Revival "the perfect starting point for newcomers" to the series. For each numbered game the newest version is the one sold today: Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden until Revival arrives, and Persona 5 Royal. Where to buy Golden is on Where to Play Persona 4. In the clip, Kazuhisa Wada recommends Revival to newcomers in Atlus's Aug 19, 2026 Developer Message.

Kazuhisa Wada said that with Persona 3 Reload, the team's first big remake, "we weren't really sure how much we could handle", so it focused on the base game; for Revival the plan was to take the lessons from Reload and make a full remake of Golden. Marie's story was too woven into Golden's main plot to hold back as an add-on. GamesRadar+ notes that Reload's Linked Episodes gave the male party members their own scenes, and suggests Revival's Location Episodes may play a similar role; Atlus has not said so. What Revival changes is on What's New in Persona 4 Revival.
Persona 6
Persona 6 was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 7, 2026, the same show that dated Revival, as a new standalone story with a new cast, coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC on day one with Game Pass and Play Anywhere, and also to PS5 and Steam. Wada placed it after Revival: the team is preparing for "its release after Persona 4 Revival". A Switch 2 version was confirmed in the September 2026 Nintendo Direct. No release date or window has been given as of Nov 3, 2026; a September 2027 date reported by Vice before the announcement is a rumor, not an announcement. The clip is Atlus's Anime Expo 2026 panel, where the team mentions that Persona 6 has been announced.
Will there be more remakes?
Wada told GamerBraves that remakes of Persona 1 and 2 are "something we should definitely do" (GamesRadar+, Aug 10, 2026), without announcing any. On Nov 1, 2026 GamesRadar+ reported footage that seemingly leaked from a Persona 1 remake; that is an unconfirmed leak, and Atlus has announced nothing.
How big is the Persona series?
SEGA put the series at over 30 million units on Jun 7, 2026, up from 15 million at the end of March 2021 (RPG Site). SEGA's April to June 2026 results showed more than a million more Persona units sold in that quarter alone, with no new release in it.
