Persona 4 Revival Battle System

Persona 4 Revival keeps Persona 4 Golden's turn-based battles, where hitting a weakness knocks a Shadow down for 1 More and knocking all of them down opens an All-Out Attack, and adds Guard Action, Send Flying, Baton Pass and Prime Time, which ends in the Series Finale finisher.

Persona 4 Revival's battles are still Persona 4's turn-based fights, in which hitting a weakness knocks an enemy down for "1 More" and knocking every enemy down opens an All-Out Attack, and Atlus adds four mechanics on top: Guard Action, which stuns a Shadow in the field; Send Flying, which knocks an ailing enemy into another; Baton Pass, which hands a 1 More to an ally; and Prime Time, a burst of free turns that ends in a finisher called Series Finale. The descriptions below are Atlus's own, from its Japanese site; impressions come from previews of pre-release builds in August and September 2026, and Wada said in July that the new options were still being balanced. Nobody outside Atlus has played the finished game as of Nov 3, 2026. The clip is Atlus's Jun 18, 2026 broadcast on Revival's battles.

What stays from Persona 4 Golden

The rhythm of a fight is unchanged. In Persona 4 Golden, analyzing an enemy shows its weaknesses; hitting one knocks the enemy down and gives the attacker another action, and when every enemy is down the party can launch an All-Out Attack on them all at once. Striking a Shadow from behind in the dungeon gives you the first move, and letting it reach you first gives it a free attack. You can command each teammate directly or set their tactics. Atlus Japan confirms that Revival keeps weakness, 1 More, All-Out Attack and Persona fusion in the Velvet Room as its core. The full Golden system, including Shuffle Time, ailments and Social Link skills, is on Persona 4 Combat and Persona Fusion; Atlus has not said whether Shuffle Time returns in Revival. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 2026 footage of a pre-release build of Revival: Teddie explains weaknesses, and a knocked-down Shadow gives another attack.

Guard Action

Guard Action works in the field, before a battle starts. When a Shadow attacks you in a dungeon, guarding at the right moment stuns it, and you can then strike first for an advantage or walk past and avoid the fight. Golden had only the choice of hitting a Shadow first or being caught, so this gives a second way to turn an ambush around.

Send Flying

Send Flying ("futtobashi" in Japanese) uses status ailments. Attacking a Shadow that is suffering an ailment can knock it into another Shadow, damaging both and spreading the ailment to the second. Persona 4 Golden's ailments include Fear, Poison, Rage and Silence; Atlus has not said which of them Send Flying can spread.

Baton Pass

During a 1 More, you can hand your extra action to an ally so that they can hit a different enemy's weakness. In Golden the character who knocked an enemy down had to use the extra turn themselves; Baton Pass lets the turn move to whoever has the right element, which makes it easier to knock down a whole group for an All-Out Attack.

Prime Time and Series Finale

Prime Time is a gauge that fills during battle. When it is full, Atlus says the party gets consecutive turns in which skills cost nothing, enemy resistances are ignored and Baton Pass is free, and it ends in a large finishing attack. PC Gamer gives the finisher's English name as Series Finale; the Japanese site calls the attack "Bokosuka Rush" and the finisher "Bokosuka Finish." In RPG Site's preview build, Prime Time lasted up to 4 turns and ended with a finisher by a party member you choose. The new advantage battle theme, "Prime Time Golden Hour Show," shares the name; see Persona 4 Revival Music.

How the new combat plays in previews

Every impression here is of an unfinished build, played for about an hour.

  • RPG Site (James Galizio, Xbox Series X development kit, August 2026): played the opening, the Yukiko's Castle fights up to Shadow Chie and several days of daily life, and found the remake already confident and stylish; this is where the four-turn Prime Time comes from.
  • GamesRadar+ (Catherine Lewis, September 2026): sword hitboxes in the dungeon felt far more accurate than in Golden, and smashable objects restore small amounts of SP, as in Persona 3 Reload.
  • PC Gamer (Mollie Taylor, Gamescom 2026): played Yukiko's Castle and Shadow Chie and wrote that the remake feels just as good as its predecessor.

PC Gamer's guide also describes battle pacing as refined, without specifics. In July 2026 Wada told Anime Corner that the knockback, guard and powerful attack options were still being balanced in playtests, so numbers seen in previews may change. More on Persona 4 Revival Previews. In the clip Wada names more refined battle pacing among the changes.

What is not known

As of Nov 3, 2026, Atlus has not said what fills the Prime Time gauge or how fast, whether Shuffle Time and its cards return, whether Golden's bike-ride skills and third-tier Personas carry over, or what difficulty settings the game has. Persona 4 Golden's 2023 release offered difficulty selection and a quick save; nothing equivalent has been announced for Revival.
