Persona 4 Combat

Persona 4 Golden's battles are turn-based: hit an enemy's weakness to knock it down and earn 1 More, knock every enemy down for an All-Out Attack, and strike first from behind. Persona 4 Revival keeps that core and adds Guard Action, Send Flying, Baton Pass and Prime Time.

Persona 4 Golden's battles are turn-based and built on weaknesses: hit a Shadow with the element or attack type it is weak to and it falls down and the attacker gets One More, another action; knock every enemy down and the whole party can launch an All-Out Attack, per TheGamer's combat tips of Jan 30, 2023. The protagonist alone can switch between Personas to find each weakness, while the four-person party each keep one Persona. The same core was already in the PS2 Persona 4 of 2008, as Famitsu describes it. Persona 4 Revival (Feb 18, 2027) keeps knock-downs, 1 More and All-Out Attacks and adds Guard Action, Send Flying, Baton Pass and a Prime Time gauge, per Atlus; those are on Persona 4 Revival Battle System.

Weaknesses, Knock Down and One More

Analyze an enemy to see what it is weak to: fire, ice, electric, wind, light, dark or physical. A hit on a weakness knocks it down and gives the attacker One More, and the chain runs until an attack misses a weakness, so plan the order of attacks (TheGamer). Hitting an enemy that is already down can leave it Dizzy, unable to act on its next turn (Game Rant). TheGamer also suggests letting the protagonist's Personas cover the elements the party lacks: with Yukiko on fire, Kanji on electric and Naoto on light and dark, he carries ice and wind. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 26, 2026 footage of a pre-release build of Persona 4 Revival.

All-Out Attack

With every enemy down, the party can rush them together in an All-Out Attack, usually heavy damage that often ends the fight. Survivors stand back up. If it will not finish the battle, TheGamer suggests carrying on with weaknesses instead (TheGamer). The damage is almighty, so against a boss that resists almighty, such as the Contrarian King or the Intolerant Officer, decline it and take the follow-up attack instead (TheGamer). Golden counts it: the Steam achievement for 50 All-Out Attacks sits beside ones for 100 weakness hits and a 999-damage blow (Steam).

Player Advantage and ambushes

Strike a Shadow from behind in the dungeon and your party acts first; let it reach you and it gets a free attack. TheGamer calls sneaking up on Shadows most valuable late in the game, when they hit much harder. The clip is Atlus's Jul 15, 2026 Combat & The TV World video for Revival.

Status ailments

Exhaustion Takes more damage and loses SP with every action
Fear May not act or guard, or may flee
Panic Acts on its own, may hit allies or throw money away
Poison Loses HP every turn
Rage Physical attacks only; double attack, half defense and accuracy
Silence No Persona skills; the protagonist cannot change Personas
Unconscious Knocked out

Party tactics and direct control

Through Change Battle Tactics you set each teammate's behavior, such as healing or attacking freely, or you can take direct control of every turn. TheGamer recommends direct control for mini-bosses, bosses and emergencies, since the AI can waste turns (TheGamer). Social Links make the party stronger in battle: they teach teammates new skills, such as reviving a fallen ally, and in the end transform their Personas, and Golden's scooter rides with friends teach skills that cannot be learned by leveling.

Healing and SP

HP is easy to restore with Dia and Media, in or out of battle. SP is the limit on a dungeon day. Vending machine drinks restore 5 or 10 SP for ¥120 and restock on Mondays; Tiny Soul Tomatoes (20 SP) and Bead Melons (full HP and SP) grow in the Dojima garden; and the Fox at Tatsuhime Shrine heals the party for a fee that drops as its link rises, per TheGamer. See Fox Social Link.

Shuffle Time and Arcana Chance

After some battles Shuffle Time deals cards, which can give a new Persona to register, Skill Cards (new in Golden) and other items; in the Hollow Forest it also offers chest keys (TheGamer). Golden also has Arcana Chance, but none of the editorial guides read for this page explains its effects or card suits, so they are left out rather than guessed.

Difficulty

Persona 4 Golden added Very Easy and Very Hard difficulties to the original's settings (PlayStation Blog, Sep 21, 2012). The 2020 Steam release added finer options for damage dealt and taken, EXP, money and retrying battles (TheGamer), and the 2023 console release lists difficulty options and a Suspend Save (Cosmocover). Revival's difficulty settings have not been announced as of Nov 3, 2026.

Combat in Persona 4 Revival

Atlus says Revival keeps knock-downs for 1 More, the All-Out Attack and Velvet Room fusion (Atlus) and adds four systems (Atlus): The clip is the same Atlus video.

  • Guard Action: guard a Shadow's attack in the dungeon to stun it, then strike first or slip past.
  • Send Flying: hit a Shadow suffering an ailment to knock it into another, dealing damage and spreading the ailment.
  • Baton Pass: during a 1 More, hand your turn to an ally to hit another enemy's weakness.
  • Prime Time: fill a gauge for consecutive free turns that ignore resistances, ending in a finisher, "Series Finale" in English (PC Gamer); RPG Site's preview build gave it up to 4 turns (Aug 26, 2026).

These come from Atlus and from previews of a pre-release build; in July 2026 Kazuhisa Wada said they were still being balanced (Anime Corner). The full detail is on Persona 4 Revival Battle System.
