Persona 4 Beginner Tips

The best first-run tips for Persona 4 Golden are to clear each dungeon on its first visits to free the calendar, study and shop on rainy days, start Knowledge and Courage early, carry a Persona of your friend's arcana, keep the Fox and the garden for SP, and lower the difficulty if you want to. Most should carry to Persona 4 Revival.

The best first-run tips for Persona 4 Golden are to clear each dungeon in as few visits as you can, long before its fog deadline, so the rest of the month is free for Social Links; to save rainy days for studying and shopping; to start raising Knowledge and Courage in April; to carry a Persona of the arcana of whoever you spend time with; and to keep the Fox and the garden going for SP, as TheGamer's pro tips and its combat tips lay out. Golden also lets you pick an easier difficulty, and the 2023 release adds a Suspend Save, so a first run need not be a struggle. For Persona 4 Revival (Feb 18, 2027), Atlus says the story and Social Links are unchanged in nature, so most of this should carry over, but Revival's difficulty options and calendar have not been detailed, as of Nov 3, 2026.

Rescue early, then live your life

Each kidnapped friend's dungeon has a deadline: if the fog rolls in before you finish, the captive dies and the game ends, per TheGamer. Kanji's Steamy Bathhouse, for example, opens on May 19 and must be cleared by Jun 4. Going in on the first free day and pushing to the boss in one or two visits leaves the rest of the window for links, jobs and stats, which is where the game is won. Every dungeon and its dates are on Persona 4 Dungeons, and the year on Persona 4 Calendar. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 26, 2026 footage of a pre-release build of Persona 4 Revival, where Teddie explains the fog.

Use rainy days

Rain is a gift in Inaba. Studying at your desk or in the library gives more Knowledge on rainy days (TheGamer), the Shiroku Store sells healing items cheaper (TheGamer), and eating at Aiya in the rain raises Understanding. Some friends, Marie among them, do not go out in the rain, so plan links for clear days.

Start Knowledge and Courage early

The five Social Stats each have five ranks and lock content. Naoto's link, which opens on Oct 21, needs both Knowledge 5 and Courage 5, and both rise slowly, so begin in April: study, read, take the hospital janitor job, and eat the rotten food in the fridge on its set days for free Courage. Margaret needs Knowledge 3 from May 19, and Dojima and Nanako need Expression. Answer in class with Persona 4 Golden Exam Answers: right answers add Knowledge, and the exams pay out money and Social Link points.

Carry the right Persona to every hangout

When you spend time with a friend, carry a Persona of their arcana: each answer they like earns an extra point, so links rise faster (TheGamer). Maxing a link opens that arcana's strongest Persona, so it pays twice. The arcana of each friend are on Persona 4 Social Links.

A few links close if you wait. Nanako's must be finished by Oct 31 (Nanako Social Link). Adachi's Jester link, new in Golden, must reach rank 6 by the end of Nov 1, after which it advances by itself (TheGamer; Adachi Social Link). Marie's must be maxed by late December for the Hollow Forest and the Golden ending; the guides give Dec 22, Dec 23 or Dec 31, so aim for the earliest (Marie Social Link). TheGamer calls Marie the link to prioritize.

Keep SP coming

SP runs out before HP in a long dungeon day. Start the Fox Social Link early: the Fox at Tatsuhime Shrine heals the party for a fee that drops as the link rises. Vending machine drinks restore 5 or 10 SP for ¥120 and restock on Mondays. From May 22 you can help Nanako with the Dojima garden, where Tiny Soul Tomatoes give 20 SP and Bead Melons restore everything (TheGamer); TheGamer adds that wheat yields chest keys, daikon gets you out of a dungeon and eggplant saves a teammate from a fatal blow.

Fight smarter

Hit weaknesses for One More, knock everyone down for an All-Out Attack, and strike Shadows from behind to act first; the rules are on Persona 4 Combat. Take direct control of the party in boss fights. TheGamer suggests bringing Teddie instead of Chie for ice, since his ice spells hit harder and he heals later, and replaying each cleared dungeon to its end for a new mini-boss that drops the strongest weapon for that friend (TheGamer).

Fuse often, and register first

Do not get attached to a Persona: fusion opens early and better ones come fast. Register a Persona in the Compendium before you fuse it away, so you can buy it back, and wait until the matching link has risen to get more bonus EXP. See Persona Fusion and Velvet Room.

Skip the side-quest detours

TheGamer advises against special trips for side quests, whose rewards you can usually find elsewhere. If you want them all, RPG Site warns that quests 30, 35, 36, 43 and 52 must be done before Nov 17 (RPG Site).

Pick a difficulty you enjoy

Golden added Very Easy and Very Hard to the original's difficulties, along with skipping cutscenes and faster loading (PlayStation Blog, Sep 21, 2012). On Steam (2020) you can tune damage dealt and taken, EXP and money and allow retries (TheGamer), and the 2023 release for PS4, Xbox and Switch lists difficulty options and a new Suspend Save (Cosmocover). The story is the same at any setting.

Know when the big choice comes

Late in the year one conversation decides which ending you get, and a wrong answer skips you to a bad ending months early. Save before December and follow Persona 4 Endings when the time comes; it is also the page that names the answers, so it carries spoilers. A first run takes about 68 hours for the main story, per HowLongToBeat as Game Rant cited it on Aug 22, 2022; see How Long to Beat Persona 4.

What carries over to Persona 4 Revival

Revival keeps Golden's story (Atlus) and, Atlus's staff say, its Social Links unchanged in nature (Anime Corner, Jul 8, 2026), so rescuing early, building stats and carrying the right arcana should still pay. Previews of a pre-release build add help in dungeons: smashable objects that restore a little SP and a glowing path forward (GamesRadar+, Sep 3, 2026). Its battles add Guard Action, Baton Pass and Prime Time (Persona 4 Revival Battle System). Atlus has not announced Revival's difficulty settings or any quick save, as of Nov 3, 2026; see What's New in Persona 4 Revival.
