Persona 4 Story
Persona 4 follows a transfer student who spends one school year in the rural town of Inaba, where he and his friends enter a world inside the TV to rescue people from a serial killer before the fog rolls in. Persona 4 Revival (Feb 18, 2027) retells the Persona 4 Golden story without changing it.
Persona 4 is the story of one school year in Inaba, a small rural town in Japan, where a high school student who has just moved in with his uncle and cousin finds that people are being murdered through a world inside the TV, and forms an investigation team with his classmates to rescue each new victim before the fog comes. That is the plot of the PlayStation 2 original (2008) and of Persona 4 Golden (2012), which adds a new character, Marie, and a winter epilogue. Persona 4 Revival, out Feb 18, 2027, is a full remake of Golden, and Atlus Japan says it keeps the original storyline as it is while renewing everything around it. The story summary below follows Persona 4 Golden; the second half carries spoilers and is marked. The clip is from Nintendo Life's review of Persona 4 Golden.

What is Persona 4 about?
A teenage boy, named by the player and called Yu Narukami in the anime, moves to Inaba for a year and lives with his uncle, Ryotaro Dojima, and Dojima's daughter Nanako, as Famitsu sums up the setup. Atlus's own synopsis opens on a rumor spreading through town: on a rainy night, a television switched off at midnight shows your soulmate. That rumor, the Midnight Channel, arrives at the same time as a chain of mysterious murders. The clip is Atlus's Jul 22, 2026 recap for Persona 4 Revival, The Story So Far.
The game splits each day between ordinary life (school, part-time jobs, friends, the Social Links) and the investigation inside the TV. Steam calls it "A coming of age story" kickstarted by the killings, and that balance is the heart of it: every case the team solves is also a friend facing the side of themselves they hide.
The Midnight Channel and the TV World
The protagonist discovers that he can go through a TV screen into another world, the TV World, where Shadows roam. In Persona 4 Golden his first visit takes him into a twisted copy of the shopping district, where he awakens to his Persona, Izanagi, and where a Midnight Channel image of Saki Konishi appears inside her family's liquor store, as TheGamer's guide describes. There he also meets Teddie, who guides the team through the TV World as its navigator until Rise takes over about a third of the way in. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 26, 2026 footage of a pre-release build of Persona 4 Revival.
The rule the whole story turns on is a deadline. Each friend's dungeon must be cleared before a fog deadline or the captive dies and the game ends. The dates for each one are on Persona 4 Calendar.
The rescues, in order
Each rescue takes the team into a dungeon shaped by the captive's inner self, as Famitsu notes, and ends with a fight against that person's Shadow, which calls itself their true self. Most of those saved join the team. The clip is from the same GameSpot footage of Revival's pre-release build, at Yukiko's Castle.
| Order | Dungeon | Who is inside | Joins the team |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The first TV World visit | (Yosuke faces his Shadow) | Yosuke Hanamura |
| 2 | Yukiko's Castle | Yukiko Amagi | Chie Satonaka (on floor 2), then Yukiko |
| 3 | Steamy Bathhouse | Kanji Tatsumi | Kanji |
| 4 | Marukyu Striptease | Rise Kujikawa | Rise, then Teddie after his own Shadow |
| 5 | Void Quest | Mitsuo Kubo | (not a party member) |
| 6 | Secret Laboratory | Naoto Shirogane | Naoto |
| 7 | Heaven | Nanako Dojima | (not a party member) |

The spring cases set the pattern. The team agrees to save Yukiko on Apr 17, and she joins on Apr 30. Kanji follows in May, and the bathhouse that holds him opens May 19 with a deadline of Jun 4. Rise disappears on Jun 24; after her rescue Teddie must face his own Shadow, and both join on Jul 10.
In summer the captive is Mitsuo Kubo, in Void Quest, a dungeon of ten "chapters" whose Shadow fights inside an 8-bit hero; it opens Jul 29 and must be cleared by Aug 12. The case does not end there. In autumn Naoto's Secret Laboratory can be entered from Sep 16 and must be cleared by Oct 5, and she joins on Oct 6.
Daily life in Inaba
Between cases, the year is full of ordinary events that the story treats as just as important: exams, a summer festival, part-time jobs, Nanako's garden, and in Golden a scooter license, trips to Okina City, a beach and a winter ski trip, all listed by Siliconera among Golden's additions. Social Links tell each friend's and townsperson's own story; the Persona 4 Social Links hub lists all of them. Marie, new in Golden, is a girl without memories who appears in the Velvet Room; her story runs alongside the investigation from April.
The late game
Spoiler warning: the rest of this page names the culprit and the ending.
Nanako is kidnapped in autumn, and the team follows her into Heaven, which TheGamer says opens Nov 6 and must be finished by Nov 20. With her is Taro Namatame. On Dec 3, in the hospital, Nanako dies and the team must decide Namatame's fate. Pushing him into a TV ends the game on a bad ending; holding back and thinking it through keeps the story going.
Namatame is not the whole answer: the route that spares him but stops there leaves the Yamano and Konishi murders unsolved. On Dec 5 the protagonist must name the culprit behind them, Tohru Adachi, and tell his friends (RPG Site). Naming him opens Magatsu Inaba, where the team fights Adachi and then Ameno-sagiri.
The story can end there: on the normal ending the protagonist goes home on Mar 20 with the killer caught but the mystery not fully solved. On the true path, the protagonist refuses to leave on Mar 20 with questions still open, and the team works out who gave Adachi, Namatame and the protagonist their power. The gas station attendant in the shopping district is Izanami, and defeating her at Yomotsu Hirasaka lifts the fog for good. Every route, with the exact choices, is on Persona 4 Endings.
What Persona 4 Golden adds to the story
Golden keeps the PS2 story and adds three things to it. Marie and her Aeon Social Link, which ends in the Hollow Forest on Feb 13 if her link is maxed in time (Inverse). Adachi's Jester Social Link, a new look at the culprit through nighttime scenes. And a winter stretch of free time plus an epilogue set the next summer, in which the protagonist returns to Inaba and meets everyone again. TheGamer calls Golden's ending canon for Golden and the True Ending canon for the PS2 game.
What Persona 4 Revival keeps and changes
Atlus says Revival keeps the original storyline as it is, and Kazuhisa Wada told GamesRadar+ that "the characters are all the same people" (Sep 2, 2026), though some dialogue was made more modern. Wada and art director Akane Kabayashi told PCGamesN they added lines where the script was unclear and cut some (Aug 26, 2026). Marie, Wada said, will be "here from the beginning" with a more natural entrance than in Golden. The team considered moving the story to the present day but kept it in its own era, because CRT televisions are central to it. Revival adds new seasonal events and Location Episodes with Aika Nakamura (Atlus Japan). Atlus has not said whether Golden's winter epilogue and Adachi's Social Link are in. More on What's New in Persona 4 Revival. In the clip, Kazuhisa Wada speaks in Atlus's Aug 19, 2026 Developer Message.
